The Writer-Editor Relationship: Choosing the Right Editor in an AI-Driven World

Copywriting, technical writing, novel writing, no matter what kind of writing you’re doing, there are people who want to make artificial intelligence (AI) a part of it. They claim that it speeds up the writing process, giving real-time, comprehensive analysis. Even if you’re not using AI to compose writing, people will ask their language model for feedback. Could AI be reliable enough, even for content that requires a more sensitive hand?

Purposeful Prose doesn’t use AI for any of their evaluations, editorial work, or feedback. So, why should it matter to us?

This is a tool that writers are using, and we feel it is important to be informed and vigilant. The development of this technology, the scams, and all we have yet to learn makes this matter.

Some editors use AI-driven tools to expedite their processes. It’s a way of getting more done in less time, right? Not even the spell-check or built-in grammar assistant tools that we’ve been using for years can always get everything right.

Humans are fallible, and so is the technology we’ve built.

An editor is a human collaborator who is meant to work with you, the writer, to help you feel confident in what you have to say. If you’re looking for an editor, get samples of their work. Get to know the programs, style guides, and other reference material they use.

You can absolutely get free feedback from any large language models, but what you’re going to get will be formulaic, highly generic feedback. If working on the structure of your writing would help you, it might not catch that. If a specific connection needed to be made between the main idea of your story and a plot line, again, the model might not catch that.

Writers have found success in generating ideas, breaking through blocks, and planning using large language models. Sometimes, they’ve used AI to simplify complex concepts. If it works, that’s great, but it should not replace the skills, knowledge, and experience that a human writer and editor can deliver. You can learn how to be more precise. You can learn how to make specific writing skills second nature without relying on a program to do it for you.

This takes time, but it brings opportunities without any added security risks.

Purposeful prose prioritizes human relationships, professional knowledge, and creativity. We ask writers to follow a transparent process that incorporates both fact-checking and plagiarism evaluation when they choose to use AI. The process delivers a result that is unique and correct, which safeguards both the writer and their audience.

Your ideal editor knows their grammar and style, but above all, your editor is a collaborator. Your editor will uplift your writing, maintaining the integrity of your work while offering tools and strategies to make it the best it can be.
